The Wandering Earth

The Wandering Earth movie was … kinda great?? (Spoiler free!)

🎥 Logline, in case you haven’t heard of it yet: “When the sun dies out, the people of Earth build giant thrusters to move the planet out of orbit and sail to a new star system.” (Yes, REALLY.)

To be fair, it’s a perfect storm for me. I’m *obsessed* with disaster movies. I love their lame plots, cheesy dialogue, insanely improbable science—even when plot holes are solved by nonsense as spectacular as: because the earth’s crust shifted while the characters were in an airplane and now they’re conveniently thousands of miles closer to where they’re going?! (Thank you 2012, sincerely 😂 )

Point is: to me, every disaster movie is a perfect amazing shining beacon of joy full of unhindered destruction, explosions, weird science, and humanity gathering the will to survive, and I CAN’T GET ENOUGH.

So, this movie could have done pretty much *anything* at all so long as it continued to be a disaster movie, BUT, other things it has that I love that you also might love:

☀️ The Sun causing all kinds of problems

🌏 Unforgiving geological calamity

Spaaace

🚀 Generational ship (=EARTH!!)

🍎 Big physics screwing with everyone’s plans

And, while technically 99% (100%?) of disaster movies are sci-fi, this one is SPACE sci-fi ❤️ which means astronauts and spaceships and EVAs and even a no-nonsense space station AI thrown in the mix, for really no good reason.

Anyways! I’d highly recommend checking it out if your theater has it showing! (Chinese, subtitled, FYI. The English translation was…not great…but again 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️)
